Founded at the site of a Dakota Indian village in 1851, Shakopee occupies the south bank of a wide bend in the Minnesota River. The Valleyfair! Amusement Park has 90 acres of rides and attractions. You can discover life in the mid-19th century at Historic Murphy's Landing living history museum. The life of an even earlier time -- England's Elizabethan era -- is acted out each summer at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.
At Stan's Museum/Scott County Historical Society, you'll find an acclaimed collection of African art and artifacts including musical instruments and weaponry. Racing fans will find the horses running at Canterbury Racetrack and Card Club Park and the NASCAR Late Models zooming at Raceway Park. A few miles north, in Chanhassen, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum offers beautiful display gardens and over 900 acres of rolling hills, woods, and prairies.
A big draw in the area is the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, the nation's largest professional dinner theater. They present world-class Broadway plays such as "My Fair Lady" and "West Side Story" on three stages. There's also the Halloween "Trail of Terror", a 3/4-mile indoor maze that runs for 3 weeks a year (beginning 2 weeks before Halloween).
