This tiny village is the real Walnut Grove on Plum Creek made famous by Laura Ingalls Wilder in the Little House on the Prairie0 books. Today the town is devoted to the memory of the popular author. The Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum features both a small collection of pioneer artifacts, including a recreation of an 1898 railroad depot, and a large collection of artifacts relating to the popular television show based on her books.
In mid-summer, the town stages a pageant, Fragments of a Dream0 , based on the events in On the Banks of Plum Creek0 . The performance is presented on the banks of Plum Creek. You can also visit the site of the dug-out where Laura's family lived on the creek itself. The small downtown area is filled with gift and antique shops.
