A border town on the Rainy River separating Minnesota from Ontario, Baudette serves as the gateway to the Lake of the Woods, a remote and spectacular wilderness area. Covering 2,000 square miles in parts of Minnesota, Ontario, and Manitoba, the lake is dotted with 14,000 islands. This is a truly excellent place to fish for walleye, Northern pike, muskie, and smallmouth bass. Baudette is the place to outfit yourself for the trip or hire a fishing guide.
Zipple Bay State Park on the lake's southern shore offers camping, hiking, boating, and swimming. The Wilderness Drive, winding through the Beltrami Island National Park from south of Baudette to Warroad following the Waters of the Dancing Sky Scenic Byway (MN 11), makes a splendid excursion in summer and fall. Wildlife viewing and birding abound.
