The Brainerd Lakes area comprises nearly 500 lakes within a 50-mile radius, with many resorts, campgrounds, and superb fishing spots. Children enjoy the rides and attractions at the Paul Bunyan Amusement Center and three waterparks. Crow Wing County Historical Museum has exhibits on the Dakota and Ojibwa Indians, fur trade, logging, railroads, and pioneer settlement. At the Northland Arboretum enjoy flowers and plants in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter, with some lighted trails for night skiing. Nearby Ironton and Deerwood have great cross-country skiing. The Paul Bunyan Recreational Trail, running from Brainerd to Bemidji, connects to many other trail systems for hiking, biking, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. At the Cuyuna Recreational Area and Croft Mine Historical Park, to the east, relive the miner's life or scuba dive in abandoned mine pits. Brainerd International Raceway is open May through September. There are more than 520 holes of golf in the Brainerd Lakes Area.
Brainerd is a superb spot to enjoy kiteboarding(also known as kitesurfing or flysurfing) year-round. It's a mixture of windsurfing, surfing, and wakeboarding and first gained popularity in the late '90s. Different-sized kites allow you to kiteboard in various wind strengths. Easier to learn than windsurfing and surfing.
