Hidden in the Root River Valley of Minnesota's "Driftless Area" (a section of the state untouched by glaciers), Lanesboro is one of a handful of towns whose entire downtown has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Alongside the many specialty shops in the quaint downtown, you can also visit the Scenic Valley Winery for tastings. Tours are available of the area's Amish farms.
The Lanesboro Museum has displays of local history including an extensive collection of photographs documenting the history of the town since the 1880s. You can also bike, roller-blade, or ski the popular Root River Trail, a 60-mile paved former railroad grade between Fountain and Rushford. Narrated trolley tours and horsedrawn rides are great ways to see the town. Outside magazine, in 2004, featured Lanesboro as one of the 20 Best "Dream" Towns in America.
