When cotton was king on the land and steam was king on the river, Natchez was the greatest of the cotton ports. Cotton and shipping fortunes created handsome mansions that rank among the most beautiful in the South. Annual spring and fall pilgrimages (provided by the Pilgrimage and Natchez Garden clubs) offer the opportunity to see more than 30 of the city's mansions in the most glamorous circumstances. The spring pilgrimage takes place in March and includes a Confederate Pageant and costumed hostesses. The fall pilgrimage is held in October. Scenic horse-drawn carriage rides are available all year through the historic area. Natchez Under-the-Hill (a quaint riverboat-landing district of shops, riverboat gaming, and restaurants) was once called "The Barbary Coast of Mississippi." Grand Village of the Natchez Indians is open to visitors. The city of Natchez features more than 500 antebellum homes, churches, and public buildings. Graceful white columns, picturesque buildings, tree-lined entrance ways, and richly landscaped gardens reflect the genteel charm of mid-1800s Natchez. Several of these mansions are open for touring year-round, and many contain the original furnishings, giving you an insight into the lifestyles of the day. Among the great houses here are Rosalie (1820 - located on a Mississippi bluff), Stanton Hall (1857 - outstanding with its gilt French mirrors and ballroom), Longwood (1860 - an octagonal house with a domed cupola), stately Melrose (part of Natchez National Historical Park), and Monmouth (1818 - Greek Revival with spacious gardens). Other houses worth seeing Dunleith (1856); Auburn (1812), The Burn (1836), The House of Ellicott's Hill (1798), Lansdowne (1853), Longwood (1860-1861), Magnolia Hall (1858), and Weymouth Hall (1855).
