The Gibraltar of the Confederacy withstood powerful Union attacks in 1862, but in 1863, General Grant's army and Admiral Porter's ironclads drew a tight noose around the city. The siege lasted 47 days before the half-starved city surrendered. Monuments, trenches, and gun positions can be seen in 1,800-acre Vicksburg National Military Park. Artifacts from a gunboat, which was raised from the river bottom, are on display in the Cairo Museum0 . Cedar Grove antebellum home, now an inn, still has a cannonball lodged in the parlor wall. The Old Court House Museum contains siege exhibits. Antebellum homes in the area include Anchuca, Balfour House, Duff Green Mansion, and Martha Vick House. Also visit Biedenharn Candy Company Museum, where Coca-Cola was first bottled in 1894. South on Halls Ferry Road is Waterways Experiment Station, where the Army Corps of Engineers studies major harbors and waterways with the aid of large-scale models of features such as Niagara Falls and the Mississippi River (no tours).
