At one time, the name Anaconda was synonymous with copper. Today, in Montana State Park you can see the town's landmark, a towering, 585-foot brick smokestack---a remnant of the Washoe Smelter and Reduction Works, part of Anaconda's copper-mining heritage. The Copper Village Museum and Arts Center, located in the former City Hall, has photos and artifacts of the town's mining days and displays by local and national artists. Also in the historic downtown, you'll find the Montana Hotel, Hearst Library, and St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
Nearby, Lost Creek State Park offers wildlife viewing of mountain goats and big horn sheep; short trails lead to waterfalls and spectacular limestone cliffs. The Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site is about twenty miles to the north at Deer Lodge.
Miles of cross-country ski trails are available at Mount Haggin Ski Trails. Discovery Basin Ski Area is a ski resort for all levels of expertise 14 miles west of Anaconda. Winter visitors can also experience the unique rides offered by the Pintler Seed Dog Adventures Company. Anaconda's Georgetown Lake Area is rapidly becoming Montana's top choice for snowmobilers.
