Montana's largest city is a cultural, business, and historic center, and a gateway to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Yellowstone Park, and Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Take in scenic views of five mountain ranges and visit Boothill Cemetery on Black Otter Trail atop the rimrocks that border the city. Visit the art center or one of several museums, and enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, sailboarding, picnicking, and cross-country skiing at Lake Elmo in Billings Heights.
Pictograph Cave State Park, about seven miles from town, has Indian pictographs dating back more than 4,500 years. At Pompey's Pillar, a sandstone butte along the Yellowstone River 30 miles east off I-94, you'll find more pictographs and initials carved by explorer William Clark as he passed through on the celebrated Lewis and Clark Expedition.
At Chief Plenty Coups State Park Memorial, 35 miles south near Pryor, visit the Museum of Crow Culture at the home and burial site of the last chief of the Crow.
