Miners started to dig gold here in 1864, turned to silver in 1875, and to copper, lead, and zinc in 1881. Butte became known as the "richest hill on earth." From the observation platforms, you can gaze into the vast expanse of the Berkeley Open Pit Mine, opened in 1955 to extract low-grade copper ore. You can also vist the World Museum of Mining and 1899 Mining Camp, a 12-acre re-creation of a Montana mining camp. The Mineral Museum on the campus of Montana Tech displays 1,500 samples of minerals including a gold nugget weighing 27.5 ounces. The city's extensive historic district includes the Arts Chateau (1898), containing contemporary art exhibits, and the Copper King Mansion (1884-88), a 32-room Victorian mansion.
