Dillon, the county seat of Beaverhead County, is the commercial center for one of Montana's prime cattle and hay regions. At the Beaverhead County Museum, along with Indian and pioneer artifacts, you'll find outdoor displays that include a preserved cabin used by homesteaders in 1885. You can also visit the Western Montana College Gallery/Museum which has art and wildlife exhibits. Nearby, the ghost town of Bannack, the first territorial capital of Montana and the site of the area's first major gold strike, is preserved at Bannack State Historic Park. Some of Montana's most majestic mountains are in the surrounding Beaverhead National Forest which, in addition to other recreational opportunities, is noted for fine trout fishing.
