The ruins on the riverfront, near Main Street, are of Old Fort Benton, a trading post on the Missouri during fur trapping days. Fort Benton became a busy steamboat port in the 1860s and 1870s when gold-mining camps were outfitted from here. Historic Fort Benton is currently the subject of an archaeological excavation. Visit the Museum of the Upper Missouri and the Museum of the Northern Great Plains, which houses the Hornaday/Smithsonian Bison exhibit. For outdoor fun, float the wild and scenic portion of the Missouri River out of Fort Benton. A Bureau of Land Management Interpretive Center will open in June 2006.
