The seat of Ravalli County in the scenic Bitterroot Valley, Hamilton was founded by copper king Marcus Daly who first established a sawmill here to supply lumber for his copper-smelting operations. The town was platted in 1890 to serve the sawmill. Daly, who had extensive agricultural holdings throughout the valley, also purchased a nearby farmhouse as a summer home in 1886. Through nearly continual renovation over the next 25 years, the farm evolved into a mansion of fifty rooms -- with 25 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, five fireplaces of imported Italian marble. You can tour the Daly Mansion Museum, its grounds and outbuildings. Hamilton is surrounded by the Bitterroot National Forest which offers exceptional hiking, mountain biking, rafting, riding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Trails for wildlife viewing can be found at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge and the Charles Waters Nature Trail north of Hamilton.
