Helena became the state capital in 1889. The Capitol is graced by the huge painting Lewis and Clark Meeting the Flatheads, a masterpiece by Charles M. Russell. Other works by Montana's famous cowboy artist are in the Russell Art Gallery, located in the Montana Historical Society Museum. The original governor's mansion is open in summer. St. Helena's Cathedral, Reeder's Alley, Last Chance Gulch, and Holter Museum of Art are of interest. Cruise boats explore the Missouri River's cliffs and canyons at Gates of the Mountains Wilderness Area.
