At the head of five scenic valleys and three great rivers, this college town is an eclectic mix of ranchers, nature lovers, foresters, students, and writers. Take a trolley tour through the historic downtown. Watch smokejumpers practice parachuting at the Forest Service Aerial Fire Depot west of Missoula County Airport. Visit Rocky Mt. Elk Foundation Wildlife Visitor Center.
Snow Bowl Ski Area is nearby. Hike, cross-country ski, and mountain bike at Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness. Take white-water rafting, float, and fishing trips on the Clark Fork, Blackfoot, and Bitterroot rivers. The Trans-America and Great Parks bicycle routes intersect here; pick up trail maps at the Adventure Cycling Association Headquarters.
