This village, founded by Jesuit missionaries in 1854, is known for its beautiful mission, built by missionaries and Indians in 1891. The mission's 58 striking murals were created by Joseph Carignano, a Jesuit priest and the mission's cook, who had no formal artistic training. The Ninepipes Museum of Early Montana exhibits the works of Charlie Russell, Indian artifacts, historical photographs, and weaponry. The Ninepipe Wildlife Management Area is to the north. St. Ignatius is on the east side of the National Bison Range, an 18,000-acre region where 300-500 American bison and other big game animals roam free. The refuge, established in 1908, has a visitors center, bison paddock, and two scenic drives including the 19-mile Red Sleep Mountain Drive. You'll find the entrance about twenty miles away at Moiese.
