This town in the scenic Bitterroot Valley is the site of Montana's first permanent European settlement, St. Mary's Mission. Founded by Father Pierre DeSmet in 1841, the mission was closed in 1850 and then converted into a trading post, Fort Owen. Now completely restored, the mission includes the chapel, the pharmacy/home of Father Anthony Ravalli, and the log cabin of Chief Victor. You can also visit the Stevensville Museum where displays outline the history of the missionaries and lumbermen working along the Bitterroot River. The Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge provides habitats where you can see osprey, bald eagles, cormorants and a wide variety of ducks and waterfowl.
