The gold strike of 1863 at Alder Gulch brought thousands to a brawling, violent camp, that then became the territorial capital and a rich mining center producing more than $300 million. Today, 20 buildings remain. In summer, you can view nightly old-time melodrama performed by the Virginia City Players in the Opera House, and cabaret shows at Gilbert's Brewery. Nearby Nevada City, another mining town, has more than 50 restored buildings. A mining museum is between the towns. But if you tire of the history, be sure to visit the Pioneer Bar, an old-fashioned saloon where you can indulge in the more modern pursuits of video poker and video keno .
