This historic mining town in the high country is a premier ski destination in winter. In summer, hiking, fishing, and camping are popular. You can visit the Peaks to Plains Museum which offers rodeo regalia, mining equipment, Native American artifacts, and other memorabilia of pioneering and the Old West. The nearby Red Lodge Mountain Resort has over 25 miles of ski trails and a public golf course. While there you can also visit the Bear Tooth Nature Center.
Red Lodge is also at the northern end of the spectacular Beartooth All-American Road. It is one of only 20 in the country with this designation, and the only one in Montana. This two-lane road climbs to an elevation over 11,000 feet, passing snowfields, waterfalls and vistas of enormous beauty, as it travels 64 miles to Yellowstone National Park. Early snows close the road for long parts of the year but it is usually open from May through September.
