This jewel of a town on North Carolina's Crystal Coast occupies the western portion of the Bogue Banks barrier island. The beach here is made up of clean, white sand that stretches along the coast for 25 miles. Temperatures range from 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, and the "dune effect" often keeps skies clear here -- even when it's raining elsewhere in eastern North Carolina. Aside from swimming and sunbathing, you'll find places to rent boats, fish from a pier, or spend the day golfing.
East of Emerald Isle, you can visit the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, where observation decks and nature trails let you explore the coastal woodlands. Here, you'll also find the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores where the saltwater tanks will give you a close up view of the denizens who haunt the coastal waters.
