This Blue Ridge Mountain town is named for explorer Daniel Boone (who lived near here in the 1760s). Horn in the West, an outdoor historical drama presented in the summer months, tells of the exploits of the frontiersman and his men during the Revolutionary War. On the grounds of the theatre, you'll find the Daniel Boone Native Gardens and Hickory Ridge Homestead, where costumed interpreters perform traditional craft demonstrations. You can visit the Appalachian Cultural Museum for exhibits on the land of western North Carolina and how it has been used by civilization. The nearby Watauga River has whitewater rafting and canoeing. Boone is home to Appalachian State University (a leading regional comprehensive university); you'll also find Appalachian Ski Mountain and three other ski resorts in the area.
