This center of the textile industry attracts shoppers from miles around to its nearly 100 factory outlet stores. Once called "Company Shops" after the local railroad repair facilities, the city's history as a railroading center is recalled at the Burlington Depot, now a community cultural center. In City Park, you can ride a beautifully restored Dentzel Menagerie Carousel (ca. 1910). You can also visit Alamance Battleground State Historic Site, the site of the first armed clash between royal authority and colonists on May 16, 1771. Snow Camp Outdoor Theatre presents two historical dramas -- Sword of Peace0 , concerning the struggle of Quakers during the Revolution, and Pathway to Freedom0 , about the Underground Railroad in North Carolina before the Civil War.
