The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the nation's first state university, is the primary focus of this residential college town in the Piedmont. The university was chartered in 1789 and students first arrived in 1795. Outstanding features of the campus include the Ackland Art Museum, with its collection of 15,000 pieces of European, Asian, and African art, the North Carolina Collection Gallery in the Wilson Library, containing exhibits on American Indians and colonial and other historic artifacts, the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, and the Dean E. Smith Center, home of the Tarheels championship basketball teams. You can also visit the 600-acre North Carolina Botanical Garden which has extensive nature trails, a large herb garden, and a collection of carnivorous plants.
