Charlotte's business district is called "uptown." Uptown is encircled by Interstates 77 and 277 and contains a fairly regular grid pattern of streets. To make the area more driver-friendly, the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) Web site includes information on everything from parking regulations to one-way streets. Between CDOT and a good map, you should not have a problem finding your way around town.

Public Transport

Bus:Charlotte Transit (704-336-RIDE) provides bus transportation for Charlotte and surrounding Mecklenburg County. Both local and express bus service is available, with local service fare set at $1.20 and express fare costing $1.65. Weekly passes are available at a discount, but are only valid on local buses. Local service runs from 5:30 am to midnight from Monday through Saturday; Sunday service begins at 7 am and ends at midnight. Express buses operate from 6 am to 9 am and from 3 PM to 6 PM, weekdays only.

Taxis:Charlotte's main cab companies are Crown Cab Company, Inc. (704-334-6666) and Yellow Cab Company of Charlotte (704-332-6161). Your best bet for quick service is to call for dispatch.

Airport

Charlotte/Douglas International Airport (CLT)

Charlotte/Douglas International Airport (CLT) is located seven miles west of uptown.

Many local hotels provide courtesy vans to bring their guests into the city; check to see whether your hotel offers this service when you make your reservations. Ground transportation is available at the curb outside baggage claim on the airport's lower level.

Transportation to uptown Charlotte:

Public Transit:Charlotte Transit (704-336-RIDE) runs buses between the airport and uptown during rush hours. Call for schedules and additional details.

Taxi/Shuttle:Local taxi and shuttle van service is available. Expect a taxi fare of about $20 for a ride between the airport and uptown; shuttle service runs about $16.
