Overlooking the Little Tennessee River, Franklin is known as the "Gem Capital of the South." You are welcome to do your own digging at several area mines -- some containing only native rocks and some "salted" to make the search for semi-precious stones more likely to be a satisfying experience. Garnets, rubies, rose quartz, and sapphires are among the stones that have been found in local mines. You can also visit the Scottish Tartans Museum for exhibits on the last 300 years of Scottish dress. Take Route 28 southeast towards Highlands to see (and walk behind) 75-foot Dry Falls and to see (and drive under!) the 120-foot cascade of Bridal Veil Falls.
