Both colonial capital and state capital in the 1700s, New Bern is ripe with historical treasures. Chief among them is Tryon Palace, the residence of the royal governor before the Revolution and the first state capitol from 1776 to 1794. The magnificent Georgian structure, which was rebuilt 150 years after the disastrous fire of 1798, is surrounded by formal English gardens. On the grounds, you can visit the John Wright Stanly House (1780) and the Dixon-Stevens House (1828). The nearby New Bern Academy Museum (1809) is included in the Tryon Palace admission. Historic houses of worship include the First Presbyterian Church (1819), Christ Episcopal Church (1875), and Temple B'nai Sholem (1908). You'll find ample opportunities for outdoor recreation at Croatan National Forest, a 159,000-acre estuarian reserve of hardwood and pine forests.
