Car

Interstates 40 and 440 form the "Beltline" around central Raleigh. Interstate 85 cuts across the north side of Durham, with Interstate 40 to the south and Route 147 (Durham Freeway) connecting the two. There is congestion along the expressways and main roads during morning and evening rush hours. At other times driving is relatively easy. Raleigh streets with north and south addresses divide along Hillsborough Street and New Bern Avenue. East and west addresses divide along Fayetteville Street. In Durham, north-south addresses divide along Main Street and east-west addresses divide along Mangum Street.

Public Transport

Bus: The CAT (Capital Area Transit) system provides bus service in Raleigh. Buses operate from 5:30 AM to 11 PM with hourly service on weekends. Rides cost $0.75. (919-828-7228)

Bus service in the Triangle area is provided by TTA (Triangle Transit Authority). Durham buses run from about 6 AM until 10 PM weekdays. There is no service on Sunday. Fare is $2. (919-549-9999)

Taxi: Cab rates in Raleigh start at $3.70 for the first mile and $2 for each additional mile. Cab rates in Durham start at $2.50 for the first mile and $1.35 for each additional mile. Cabs may be hailed on the street but it is best to call or find one at a cab stand. Raleigh cab companies include Midway Taxi (919-266-3015) and Triangle Yellow Cab (919-832-5811). Durham companies include ABC Cab (919-682-0437) and Dixon Cab (919-688-9593).

Airport

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is located off I-40, midway between Raleigh and Durham and ten miles from both. (919-840-2123)

Transportation from the airport to Raleigh-Durham destinations:

Bus:Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) provides bus service to either Raleigh or Durham for about $2. (919-549-9999)

Taxi: Rates established by the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority are $2.30 for the first one-sixth mile and $0.30 for each additional one-sixth mile. Approximate costs are: Raleigh $27.50; Durham $27.50; Cary $18.50; Chapel Hill $34.70.
