This pleasant Piedmont city, founded in 1753, played military roles in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. The walking tour of the downtown features over 90 historically significant buildings and places. Among the most interesting are the Utzman-Chambers House (1814), which is furnished with fine antiques of the late 18th century, and the Josephus Hall House (1820), the residence of the Chief Surgeon of the Confederate Prison. You can take a self-guided driving tour of the Salisbury National Cemetery and Confederate Prison Site, where monuments honor the estimated 11,000 Union soldiers who are believed to have died here. In nearby Spencer, you'll find the North Carolina Transportation Museum, while Rockwell is headquarters for the Charlotte Metro Zoo.
