Potters from England were attracted to this area in the mid 1700s due to the ready availability of surface clay. Today's thriving pottery industry is composed of many of the descendants of the original potters/settlers. Be sure to visit the North Carolina Pottery Center for exhibits on the state pottery industry and information on visiting the 90 potters who have studios in the Seagrove area. About six miles north of the city, you'll find the North Carolina State Zoological Park; over 1,000 animals live here in simulated natural habitats. The four-mile walkway through the park takes you through a rain forest, an African plain, and free-flight aviary of exotic birds. The North America section contains desert, coastal, Alaskan, and other environments.
