The four-story wooden chest of drawers that heralds the downtown furniture district of High Point is an appropriate landmark for the "Furniture Capital of the World." It's a very big dresser (the world's largest), and High Point is very big on furniture, the manufacture and retailing of which forms a huge part of the local economy. Beyond giant dressers, though, High Point also offers scads of historic sights and activities.
The Angela Peterson Doll & Miniature Museum (336-885-3655) is the largest doll museum in the south, with more than 1,700 dolls and loads of cool doll houses in its collection. Then there's the Furniture Discovery Center (336-887-3876), a museum whose presence in High Point should require no further elucidation.
Castle McCulloch (336-887-5413) dates back to the 19th century and is available to tour. The Mendenhall Plantation (336-454-3819) was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and is also open to the public. Music fans will dig seeing John Coltrane's boyhood home on Underhill Street, as well as a commemorative marker for the jazz great at the corner of Centennial and Commerce.
Adjacent to High Point Lake is the Piedmont Environmental Center (336-883-8531), which has 375 acres of hiking trails, a nature preserve, animal exhibits, and a nature store. It's well worth a stop while you're in the area.
The High Point Theatre (336-841-2273) hosts productions from August through October, including the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival. The Theatre Art Galleries (336-887-2137) have rotating exhibitions of historical, regional, and community art.
There are tons of shopping possibilities downtown, and Oak Hollow Mall (336-886-6255) features more than 90 specialty and boutique shops, as well as department stores and a food court.
