Nestled at the foot of the Turtle Mountains, Bottineau is the gateway to Lake Metigoshe State Park, largest and one of the most attractive of North Dakota's state parks. The beautiful lake also extends into Canada. Facilities include campsites, lodge, and cabins. Fishing, boating, and water sports are popular. The area is the home of many varieties of wildfowl, including the great blue heron. The 58,000-acre J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge, attracting naturalists with a rich variety of wildfowl to observe and photograph, extends from the Canadian border to 25 miles south of town. Enjoy cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, and hunting in the Turtle Mountains.
