Dickinson, the seat of Stark County and the home of Dickinson State University, is the economic hub of southwestern North Dakota. The city's main attractions are grouped around the Dakota Dinosaur Museum, which features 11 full-scale dinosaurs including a life-size triceratops and Edmontosaurus. Nearby, you'll find the Joachim Regional Museum with local history displays, the Pioneer Machinery Museum, and Prairie Outpost Park which has an assemblage of pioneer buildings brought here from other sites in the area.
To the east, you can visit the Assumption Abbey in Richardton; the Bavarian Romanesque structure has 50 stained glass windows, impressive arches, and two dozen paintings of the saints. You'll find swimming, fishing, boating, waterskiing, picnicking, and camping at nearby Patterson Lake. Theodore Roosevelt National Park is one-half hour west of Dickinson.
