North Dakota's largest city, Fargo was named for William G. Fargo of Wells Fargo Express, an important factor in the railroad-building era which spurred the development of the Red River Valley and of Fargo and its neighbor across the state line, Moorhead, Minnesota. Both cities now are commercial and agricultural centers of the rich valley that calls itself -- with good reason -- the breadbasket of the world.
They are also educational centers. In Fargo, North Dakota State University is especially noted for its experimental farms and research in grain and animal breeding. Moorhead adds educational and cultural variety with Concordia College and Moorhead State University. Though progressive, the city also values its past, reflected in its historic downtown business and residential streets, such as 8th Street South. In West Fargo, Bonanzaville USA has a pioneer village, Native American artifacts, antiques, and an aircraft museum.
