A rich, adventurous French nobleman, the Marquis de Mores, came to the Badlands in 1883 on a hunting trip and was inspired to launch a new project at this town, which he founded and named after his wife. But the marquis's idea did not come about until a half-century later. He planned to establish packing plants in the area, then ship meat in refrigerated cars, instead of driving live beef on the hoof. His first plant here and several in other western settlements cost him his fortune, leaving only some fascinating relics in Medora. His 26-room chateau, containing elegant French furnishings, the marquis's saddles, spurs and boots, and other memorabilia, was donated to the state by his son and is now a state historic site. The region's other colorful personality was Theodore Roosevelt, who came in 1883 to recover his health by cattle ranching in the great outdoors. Many memories of the spirited man who later became president are preserved in Medora.
