Established in 1623, Dover is considered to be the oldest settlement in New Hampshire, although the town center has moved considerably inland from its original location on Dover Point. Once a thriving seaport, and still one of the state's leading manufacturing centers, Dover lost its status as a shipping center due to the effects of railroad competition and a great flood in 1896 that filled the harbor with debris. Among the city's wealth of historic structures, you can visit the three buildings of the Woodman Institute. Hale House (1814), where Lafayette and President James Monroe were guests, features period furnishings and historical displays. You'll find natural history exhibits at Woodman House (1818). The Damm Garrison House (1675) is made of hand-hewn lumber and has Colonial furnishings, tools, and utensils.
