The town was founded in 1638 by Reverend John Wheelright and Anne Hutchinson, who were banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony as dangerous nonconformists. Exeter, once the state capital, is now the home of the Phillips Exeter Academy. Stroll down the streets, admire the many old homes, call at the academy, and visit the Congregational Church (1798).
