The "Great Stone Face," immortalized in story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, crumbled in 2003, but the Old Man in the Mountain Historic Site includes an overlook that still looks down on one of New Hampshire's most celebrated resort areas. Here cable-suspended tramcars whisk you to an observation platform atop Cannon Mountain for a panoramic view of the Franconia Notch area. Skiers find that Cannon Mountain ski runs are some of the best in the eastern United States. The Flume, a chasm complete with rushing mountain stream and waterfalls, offers hikers an excellent walk, and Echo Lake provides boating and swimming. Also visit Frost Place and the New England Ski Museum.
