Ensconced in the White Mountains at the junction of the Androscoggin and Peabody rivers, Gorham is the center of a vast vacationland. You can swim, fish, hike, and camp at nearby Moose Brook State Park and enjoy skiing in the nearby mountains. Gorham offers moose-viewing nature tours as well. For northbound hikers on the nearby Appalachian Trail, Gorham offers the last full service community on the way to Mount Katahdin in Maine. South of Gorham, the Mt. Washington Auto Road winds eight miles to the 6,288-foot top of the highest point in the northeast and, in winter, one of the coldest and windiest places on earth. The museum at the summit offers displays on the mountain's geology, biology, and weather. The adventuresome enjoy rugged backcountry skiing (be prepared to pack in your gear) and hiking at Tuckerman Ravine on the mountain's southeast shoulder.
