Newark is more than the Newark International Airport. The state's largest city is a major commercial, financial, and educational center, with many fine historic buildings and a rich variety of cultural offerings. Here you'll find the huge Catholic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, a vast French Gothic structure of soaring spires, Cararra marble, and hundreds of stained glass windows. The Newark Museum offers a large and impressive collection of American, Tibetan, African, and American Indian art and artifacts. Ballantine House (1885), a restored Victorian mansion, is part of the museum complex.
Second only to Mount Rushmore, Newark is the site of sculptor Gutzon Borglum's most important works, including the great bronze group, Wars of America, and his famous Abraham Lincoln. Newark Symphony Hall (1925) offers performances by the New Jersey Symphony and New Jersey State Opera. You'll also find interesting historical displays at the Newark Public Library and the New Jersey Historical Society. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center has become a premier venue for concerts, dance troupes, and other shows. Newark Bears minor league baseball is played in Bear & Eagles Riverfront Stadium a 6,200-seat venue downtown.
