This Navajo population and administrative center is named for the towering volcanic neck that rises west of town. Ship Rock, known to the Navajos as Tse Bitai (the winged rock), juts 1,700 feet above the surrounding landl. This rugged rock formation is sacred to the Navajos and may be viewed, but is off-limits to hikers and mountain climbers. A five-day fair is held the first weekend in October in town.
