Familiar to most travelers only for its famous namesake, Carlsbad Cavern National Park, the city of Carlsbad is also an important center for alfalfa growing and potash mining. Before or after visiting the caverns, 23 miles to the southwest, you might want to take in the Living Desert State Park on Carlsbad's northwest side. The park's zoo and arboretum are dedicated to the wildlife of the Chihuahuan Desert, with coyotes, javelina, pronghorn, and mountain lions among the creatures you'll find along the park's meandering nature trails. Downtown, a dam on the Pecos River has created the two-mile-long Lake Carlsbad Recreation Area where swimming and waterskiing are among the popular activities. The controversial Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, a project to store nuclear waste in underground salt beds near Carlsbad, is explained at the WIPP Visitor Center. You can also visit the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center where dinosaur bones, Indian and pioneer artifacts, and art from the Taos school are among the displays.
