This town on the High Road to Taos was founded by the Spanish in 1598 as one of the most remote outposts in their New World holdings. The town is noted for its fine blanket weaving which has been carried on since master weavers arrived here from Spain in 1805. Some local families have carried on this tradition for eight generations. The town is also famous for the Santuario de Chimayo completed in 1816. The dirt on which the chapel is built is reputed to have enormous powers to heal the sick; the crutches lining the church's earthen pit bear testimony to those who have found it to be so. You may also visit Santo Nino, a privately-owned chapel where the sick seek spiritual intercession. Nearby, the villages of Cordova and Truchas are well known for the skills of their woodcarvers and weavers, respectively; you'll find numerous workshops throughout each village.
