Historic Cimarron enjoys a long and colorful past and a lovely setting on the Cimarron River in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. As one of the wildest of Wild West towns, Cimarron saw almost every outlaw, lawman, frontiersman, and entertainer of note pass through its rowdy streets in the late 1800s. This was where Buffalo Bill created his Wild West Show and hired Annie Oakley. You can stay at the restored St. James Hotel, where the rooms bear the names of the famous and infamous who are known to have slept there. Down the block, the Old Aztec Mill Museum has four floors of well-annotated artifacts concerning local history. Nearby, the Philmont Scout Ranch, operated by the Boy Scouts of America, offers tours of the exotic Villa Philmonte, a mansion built from 1922 to 1928. You can also visit the Kit Carson Museum, ten miles south of Cimarron in Rayado.
