A commercial center for the surrounding fertile agricultural farmland of the Espanola Valley, this small town on the Rio Grande makes a good central location for visiting nearby pueblos and archaeological sites.
Craftsmen at the Santa Clara pueblo are noted for their fine polished red and black pottery. At Santa Clara, you can also visit the ancient ruins of the Puye Cliff Dwellings, which are the remains of an Anasazi community where over 700 rooms were created on the top and sides of the Pajarito Plateau.
You'll find a museum and gift shop with top quality crafts from several pueblos at Pojoaque. San Ildefonso pueblo, west of Pojoaque, became famous for the work of Maria Martinez. Her black-on-black style of pottery continues to be carried on by members of her family. At the Nambe pueblo, you can visit the Nambe Trading Post and the nearby Nambe Falls Recreation Area.
North of Espanola, San Juan pueblo -- the site of the short-lived, first capital of New Mexico -- is the home of the Oke Oweenge arts and crafts cooperative where exquisite locally-produced baskets, wood carvings, and red pottery are offered for sale.
