This stage coach stop amid the red rock mesas of western New Mexico was transformed into a cosmopolitan center with the discovery of coal and the arrival of the railroad in 1881. Although coal mining ended in the mid-20th century, the city is a major trading area for the people of the Navajo Reservation to the north and Zuni Pueblo to the south. Since 1922, the city has hosted the Inter-Tribal Ceremonial, which brings in thousands of Navajo, Zuni Pueblo, Cheyenne, Hopi, and other native people for dances, craft shows, and a rodeo. The Ceremonial, which attracts huge crowds of tourists, is held in mid-summer at Red Rock Park. In addition to the park's rodeo arena and natural amphitheatre, you can visit Anasazi ruins and the Red Rock Museum, where both modern and ancient examples of tribal arts and crafts are displayed.
