This town, lying in the shadow of urban Las Cruces, was once the larger and more important of the two towns. In 1854, the U.S. secured the last portion of the lower 48 states by signing the Gadsden Purchase. Later, Billy the Kid was put on trial here for murder. Also called La Mesilla and Old Mesilla, the town's central plaza contains many original buildings which have been restored to their 19th-century appearance. Among the many popular eating places here, you'll find a restaurant in the old Butterfield Overland Stagecoach stop. You can also visit the San Albino Church. Ask for a historical walking tour map at the visitor center.
A few miles south, Stahmann Farms boasts the world's largest family-owned pecan orchard with over 128,000 trees generating more than 10 million pounds of pecans annually.
