Maintained as a living history museum where modern intrusions are severely discouraged, Lincoln looks much as it did in the 1870s when it was the center of the Lincoln County War. This five-day shoot-out between the forces of rival general store operators gave birth to the legend of Billy the Kid. The town is a must-stop location for anyone interested in the Old West. At the town's excellent history center, you'll find exhibits detailing the Billy the Kid story, the lives of the Apache, Spanish, and Anglo groups who settled here, and the "Buffalo Soldiers," black cavalrymen of the 9th Regiment who kept order in Lincoln during the war. You can also visit the original courthouse, the Mission of San Juan, El Torreon (the rock fortress built by early settlers), the mansion of Dr. Earl Woods, and the general store of John Tunstall whose mercantile competition with Murphy resulted in violence and death. Old Lincoln Days in August celebrates the town's heritage with music, crafts, and tales of the mountain men.
