Set high in the glorious Sacramento Mountains, with a wide variety of lodging, from rustic cabins to full-service hotels, Ruidoso is one of the most popular recreational areas in the Southwest. Hunting, hiking, golfing, horseback riding, and fishing draw outdoor enthusiasts while the town's numerous restaurants, shops, and art galleries cater to those who simply want to enjoy the spectacular scenery and cool summertime temperatures.
Ruidoso Downs offers premier horse racing, including the world's richest quarter horse race, All American Futurity on Labor Day. Nearby, the Hubbard Museum of the American West features Western and equine related memorabilia. The Ski Apache resort on the side of Sierra Blanca attracts skiers to its 55 runs and short lift lines. In summer, you can drive up the mountain to Monjeau Lookout or Windy Point for sumptuous views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Also of interest is Smokey Bear Historical State Park, located 20 miles north of Ruidoso in Capitan.
