As the name suggests, Silver City was built on the silver-mining boom of the 1870s, but it was lumber and education that allowed the town to prosper once the silver boom went bust. At the southern edge of the huge Gila National Forest, the city is home to the pretty campus of Western New Mexico University, founded in 1893. The city's numerous Victorian-era homes preserve its aura of the Old West. Several sites relate to Billy the Kid, who grew up here. You can explore the city's history at the Silver City Museum which also tells the story of nearby Tyrone, a fancy copper town that disappeared with the demand for copper in the 1920s.
You can view the workings of the huge open-pit copper mine, Santa Rita Chino, from its observation platform. The city is also the gateway to the Gila Wilderness Area to the north, and the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument.
