A laid-back combination of trader's outpost, artist's colony, and ski resort, Taos is worth a visit, if only for its spectacular mountain setting. The old Spanish plaza is intact, if crammed with shops, and there are a surprising number of good museums for a small town, including the Art Museum of the Harwood Foundation, the Millicent Rogers Museum, and Stables Art Center. You can also visit Kit Carson's house and grave.
The main draw, however, is Taos Pueblo, the most popular and largest of the Northern New Mexico pueblos. The surrounding area is great for hiking, biking, horseback riding, llama treks, white-water rafting in summer, and skiing in the winter.
